Hiatus hernia happens when the upper part of the stomach, and sometimes other organs ‘bulge’ up into the chest through an opening in the diaphragm called the ‘esophageal hiatus’. According to Dr Aparna Govil Bhasker, consultant bariatric and laparoscopic surgeon, MetaHeal – Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery Center, Mumbai; Saifee, Apollo, and Namaha Hospitals, Mumbai, it is a common condition that needs timely treatment to prevent complications.
