Next Gen
Welcome to Byrdie’s series, Next Gen, where we profile Gen Z celebrities, influencers, and entrepreneurs. As a collective, members of Gen Z are dynamic trendsetters and culture shifters. And when it comes to beauty and wellness, they have ushered more creativity, inclusivity, and transparency into the industry. In this column, we’re stepping into the minds of some of the most notable Gen Z’ers to learn more about how they are redefining beauty, the products they swear by, and their plans for the future.
Chlöe and Halle Bailey, of the sister supergroup Chlöe x Halle, are two of Hollywood’s most dynamic young voices. As a duo, the talented siblings (who are 26 and 24 years old, respectively) have released two acclaimed albums, snagged five Grammy nominations, and earned a major co-sign from Beyoncé herself (they’re signed to her label, Parkwood Entertainment).
Individually, the Bailey sisters have achieved equally as much in the music and acting world. Between 2023 and 2024, Chlöe has released two impressive albums—In Pieces and Trouble in Paradise—and starred in buzzy projects like the Amazon Prime series Swarm and Peacock film Praise This. Last year, Halle famously took on the role of Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Young Nettie in the musical adaptation of The Color Purple. And this year, she’s released two melodic singles, “In Your Hands” and “Because I Love You.”
While their musical and on-screen endeavors are more than enough to keep them busy, Chlöe and Halle also find time to collaborate with brands that inspire them. Collectively, they’ve worked with Pandora, Victoria’s Secret Pink, and now Core Hydration. Ahead, the Bailey sisters fill us in on their current projects, the wellness tips they swear by, and their current beauty essentials.
You two have inked incredible partnerships with brands like Core Hydration. How do you approach partnerships as sisters?
Halle: “My sister and I think partnering with brands we love and use daily is important. Working with Core Hydration was perfect because, as singers, hydration is so important. Our schedules are hectic, and if we don’t hydrate ourselves, we can feel depleted and unable to do our jobs.”
As busy performers, what health and wellness hacks keep you feeling your best?
Chlöe: “Hydration is key. I like to add chlorophyll to my water because it’s like a body detoxifier. I also take daily vitamin supplements and probiotics. I stay active with boxing and swimming as well.”
Halle: “I really love being out in nature. It refreshes me. I’m constantly outside at the park or on my bike with my son, Halo.”
What are your current beauty must-haves this winter?
Chlöe: “My eyelash extensions are my beauty must-have. I’ll take extensions over a strip lash any day. During the winter time, I also need my cocoa butter body butter.”
Halle: “I never leave the house without a Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb, Anastasia Beverly Hills’ brow product, and sunscreen.”
You two have become known for showcasing the beautiful versatility of locs. Where do you find hairstyle inspiration, and what is your hair care routine?
Chlöe: “I’m happy because my edges have been ferociously growing, and I have to give that to being stress-free. I’ve also been using a castor oil spray to moisturize my edges.”
Halle: “My locs are short right now, and it’s way easier to do them. I’m in this new era of being a mom, and I just don’t really feel like doing my hair a lot of the time. But having them shorter also helps when trying to do styles with extensions because my hair is able to lay flatter.”
You two recently performed together at the British Fashion Awards. What was that moment like, and how did you feel seeing such a positive response from fans?
Chlöe: “It makes us so excited that other people are happy to see us together on stage. Even during rehearsal, our synergy felt so good. It was so special. Seeing how we’ve evolved as individuals and found our strength has been cool. It has made our group stronger.”
Halle: “It’s always fun when we perform together on stage like old times. We’re both in these new, progressive eras of our lives, and that brings a whole new story to our performances. We feel like more mature, grown versions of ourselves.”
What can you share about what you’re working on as solo acts and as a duo?
Halle: “My sister just dropped her amazing album, Trouble in Paradise. Everyone should check it out. I’m working on my solo project and hoping to release it early next year. We’re also working on a joint project together. We are doing so many things, from music to movies, so our schedules are filling up. It’s such a blessing. We’re just trying to learn how to manage everything.”
What’s been the biggest highlight of 2024 for both of you?
Chlöe: “The highlight of this year would be putting out Trouble in Paradise. I also love the downtime moments I forced myself to have between the working moments.”
Halle: “My son, Halo, is my favorite part of 2024. This year, I took a little bit of a break from work. But in my personal life, Halo is my angel. I don’t know what life was like without him anymore. He’s my biggest blessing and the greatest part of 2024.”
What’s been the best sisterly advice you’ve given each other this year?
Chloe: “Halle told me that I’m beautiful, never doubt myself, and that I’m crazy for thinking that I am anything less than.”
Halle: Chlöe teaches me a lot as my big sister. I admire how she watches me and lets me do my thing while letting me know she is always there. I don’t feel judged by her, especially since we’re on our separate life journeys right now. I know that I’m always safe with her.”
