Dancing With the Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy just gave an inside look at — his insides.
He passed a kidney stone on a flight back home to Los Angeles after visiting Marbella, Spain, he explained on his Instagram Stories, captured by PEOPLE.
He’s able to make light of it now, but it sounds like it was quite an ordeal, beginning when he arrived in Spain with some pain in his side and back.

“Went to bed, can’t sleep, pain throughout the night,” he recalled.
When he woke up, it was worse, “throbbing and poking.” He attempted to walk off the pain to no avail.
“My side and back are now KILLING ME,” Chmerkovskiy said. “So much so that uncharacteristically I decide Imma go to the hospital. In Marbella lol. It was excruciating pain though. I didn’t know what to do.”
Chmerkovskiy says the medical team found blood in his urine and that he had a urinary tract infection caused by a kidney stone. They treated him with antibiotics and a painkiller, and he finally felt some relief and was able to “breathe again.”
“Next day, killed it. Back to normal, being myself,” he wrote. “Finished off an amazing event. Now flying home and boom, felt a little something somewhere sacred. Go to the bathroom and see this little guy.”

Chmerkovskiy swore that he would never have “sweets or ultra fried/greasy foods again.”
Causes of the condition include “drinking too little water, exercise (too much or too little), obesity, weight loss surgery, or eating food with too much salt or sugar,” according to the National Kidney Foundation.

So Chmerkovskiy is now on the mend. Another season of the reality competition is also on the way, although the cast has not been announced.
The show did reveal last week that Robert Irwin, the brother of Bindi Irwin, who won the competition in 2015’s season 21 after being partnered with Derek Hough, would be one of the celebrities.
Expect the new season of Dancing With the Stars to premiere in the fall on ABC and Disney+.
