It’s a week to set the OOTO auto-response early. Because there’s nothing like a national holiday on a Friday to justify, um, taking the whole week off.
And there’s nothing like a national holiday to remind us how much we love America’s founding cities, Boston and Washington, D.C., and favorite hotels that make the trip worthwhile.

Midcentury Cool, $$
The Scene
A polished outpost in Dupont Circle, this Doyle Collection flagship feels like a cosmopolitan club, its lobby all velvet banquettes, brass accents, and midcentury glamour. Throughout, you’ll feel a dash of Irish warmth that never feels forced. The vibe is quietly confident — stylish but never stuffy, upscale but never uptight.
The Action
Spacious rooms are outfitted with marble bathrooms, heated floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The top-floor suites bring the drama with private terraces and skyline views. The Pembroke is a favorite for its bright brasserie feel and seasonal, elegant plates; the Doyle Bar is for sliding into a leather booth and ordering one too many martinis. Morning coffee comes courtesy of Doyle & Co., the in-lobby café that knows its audience.

When Viceroy launched Hotel Zena (their second in D.C.) at the nexus where Thompson Circle meets vibrant 14th Street, they didn’t want to just open any new hotel with fancy mini bar snacks and a trendy apothecary. They set out to celebrate the accomplishments of women and the struggle for gender equality in an immersive space designed where all genders, races, and sexualities would feel welcome. And they made it really, really affordable. Hear, hear.
The Action
The 191 guest rooms have soft colors and curved walls meant to evoke the female body. Original art abounds — in the lobby, in the rooms, in the gallery. (It’s not like you won’t notice the towering Ruth Bader Ginsberg mural.) Figleaf serves Mediterranean cuisine with a Latin accent and terrific cocktails; Hedy’s Rooftop has excellent city views.
This Place Is Perfect For
Those who want to support hotels with a greater mission.

Boston, Massachusetts

The Scene
Tucked into a Beaux-Arts landmark on a cobblestone street in Beacon Hill, XV Beacon is where Boston’s old money and modern minimalism quietly shake hands. The vibe is classic and cool: mahogany paneling, curated contemporary art, fireplaces in every room, and a Lexus house car on standby. The hotel’s muted palette and low-key elegance feel more private residence than hotel — and that’s exactly the point.
The Action
The 63 serene rooms have heated bathroom floors, cashmere throws, marble bathrooms stocked with eco-friendly amenities, and pet-friendly offerings like a “Dawgone” room service menu. Downstairs, Mooo…., the hotel’s sleek steakhouse, draws as many locals as visitors. Upstairs, the rooftop terrace has great Boston skyline views.
This Place Is Perfect For
Giving a little sex appeal in a town not typically known for it.

The grande dame of Back Bay is back — and she’s never looked better. Originally built as the first Ritz-Carlton in the United States, The Newbury has been completely reimagined with a moody, modern elegance that still nods to its storied Gilded Age bones. There’s marble and velvet everywhere, curated art on the walls, and a library lounge straight out of a Henry James novel. Fireplaces flicker in select suites. The Public Garden is your front yard.
The Action
The 286 rooms are plush and quiet, with sweeping city or park views. The showstopper is Contessa, the rooftop Italian restaurant from Major Food Group where the scene rivals the handmade pasta. Downstairs, the dark-paneled Street Bar channels old-Boston club vibes, perfect for a martini and clam chowder. Want a fire lit in your suite or afternoon tea delivered on a silver tray? Just ask.
